The Asian Federation on Intellectual Disabilities (AFID) holds a Conference once every other year from amongst its 15 member-countries. This year, Singapore is due to host the 19th AFID Conference on Intellectual Disabilities from 22 -26 November 2009 at the RELC International Hotel (http://www.relcih.com.sg). Singapore first hosted such a Conference in 1987, and this is the second time we are doing so.

The theme of the Conference is "Towards Holistic Development". With eighteen Conferences under its belt, AFID is moving from strength to strength. We are now in a position to progress to the holistic development of people with intellectual disabilities.

We have invited four eminent Professors of Special Education from the United Kingdom, Australia, USA and Taiwan, to speak on inclusive education and related issues. We also have a Keynote Speaker on health matters in relation to people with intellectual disabilities. Plenary sessions will also include other issues like CBR or community-based rehabilitation. There will also be educational visits to special schools and rehabilitative centres catering to persons with intellectual disabilities. Two pre-Conference Workshops are also planned, and these will enhance the skills and knowledge for special education teachers and providers of people with intellectual disabilities.

We invite all of you to participate. Details of the Conference can be obtained from our website http://www.afid73.org. We look forward to welcoming all of you to the Conference in Singapore.

Yours faithfully

Dr FRANCIS C. CHEN PhD(Lond), PBM, BBM
